Restaurants may not at first glance seem like dangerous or hazardous workplaces, after all, restaurants are where you take your family for a nice meal! Unlike working in a factory or on a construction site, the potential for injury is not readily apparent, and yet, workers are injured in restaurants every day; burns, cuts, slips, falls, and more can affect restaurant workers and result in workplace injury, an injury that deserves compensation. Some of the common injuries that restaurant workers are susceptible to are described below.

Burn

Working with ovens, stoves, dishwashers, deep fryers, heat lamps and grills, as well as hot pans, pots, plates, trays, water, frying oil, and even food, can cause burns. Burns can also result from improperly maintained electrical equipment, including equipment with damaged electrical wiring or cords.

Cuts

Restaurant workers often work with sharp knives and other utensils when preparing food. This puts restaurant workers at high risk for sustaining cuts, including the severing of appendages. Lack of proper training, as well as the high-stress, high-traffic nature of restaurant food preparation areas, can elevate this risk.

Slips, trips, and falls

Because of the layout of restaurants and the nature of food service work, restaurant workers are especially prone to injuries from tripping, slipping, or falling. While navigating the restaurant floor, servers and bussers may be tripped by patrons chairs, or kitchen workers may slip due to standing water on the floor near a sink, for example.

Strains and sprains

Restaurant workers are particularly at risk for sustaining strains or sprains as a result of carrying heavy loads of dishes while serving or clearing tables or by leaning awkwardly to clear tables and take customers’ orders.

Electrical injuries

Due to the amount of electrical equipment used in a kitchen, as well as its close proximity to water, restaurant workers are at risk for electrical injuries. As mentioned above, workers in restaurants can be burned by faulty equipment or exposed wires; they can also sustain electric shocks from direct contact with electrical current, potentially even severe enough to cause death by (electrocution).
